Accounting & Bookkeeping

  • I just realized I forgot to invoice a client for a job I did a year ago. Can I still invoice the client?

Yes, you can invoice the client - there are no laws preventing you from doing so. However, I would advise against sending an invoice to the client without a phone call explaining what happened, how it happened, that you apologize for your lack of organization.

Your client's reaction will dictate your next move. They may tell you to go away, or they may sympathize and agree to pay the bill. If the client refuses to pay, you have to weigh the cost of a legal battle to get your money against the amount you may receive in a settlement.

The lesson here, I'm sure you know now - is to stay on top of your accounts receivable. Cash is king.
