Business Permits and Licenses

Business Permits and Licenses

Signage is an effective way to communicate what your business is about and the products or services you sell.  Signs are affordable, practical, and easy to use!  But before you put up a sign to advertise your business, it’s your responsibility to make sure that you’ve abided by the signage laws – and all other business permits and license requirements - in both your province and your municipality.  Let’s have a look!

GoForth has prepared a step-by-step guide to help you do just that.  Follow the steps below to ensure that your business abides by the rules and regulations in your province and municipality.  There are a lot of them – and the fines for non-compliance can be steep. So, get researching!

Step 1:  Visit www.canadabusiness.ca, and choose your language preference.

Step 2:  Click on Permits and Licenses, found on the home page.

Step 3:  The next page will prompt you to do 2 things:

  1. Select the province/territory your business is located in from the drop down menu.
  2. Enter your city or municipality.
  3. Enter a keyword associated with the type of business you operate.  Even if you already know your NAICS (Industry Classification) code, the search you conduct for permit and licence requirements in your province will only be carried out using the keywords entered.

For example, if your business is a restaurant, enter “restaurant” in the Business Activities box. From there, a list of business types will be presented.  Choose the one that best represents your business.

Step 4:  A list of permits and licenses will be presented.  Select All, or check the boxes of the permits and license requirements you wish to view.

Step 5:  Review the information on each permit or license that pertains to your business. You can save your search results by placing each permit and license that pertains to your business in My Briefcase.

Step 6:  Download any forms provided and fill out the necessary information before sending them away.
