Registering Your Business

Registering Your Business

Before Registering:  Make sure you determine what type of business structure you will be using (sole-proprietorship, partnership or corporation) and what the name of your business is going to be.  For more information on these topics check out GoForth’s Getting Started Guides – Naming Your Business and GoForth’s Getting Started Guides - Sole Proprietor, Partnership or Corporation.

If you’re all set to register your business follow the steps below:

Step 1:  Register with Canada Revenue Agency.

In order to run a business in Canada, most businesses are required to register with Canada Revenue Agency.  Once you’ve registered your business, you will receive a business number to be used for these and other accounts:

  • GST/HST
  • Payroll deductions
  • Corporate income tax
  • Import/Export account

Step 2:  Your business may also require additional registrations with different government departments, depending on the type of business you own.  Visit canada.ca/en/services/business.html and follow the steps below:

  1. Select Starting from the navigation bar menu.
  2. Next, select Registering your business from the list provided.
  3. Scroll scroll down the page to Provincial and territorial business registration and review registration requirements for the province in which you will operate your business.
  4. Read through the organizations listed and determine if your business should be registered with them as well.
  5. Select any organizations that apply. At the bottom of each page you’ll see a link to Learn more, Find contacts and Access application form(s).  All of these link you directly to the organization’s home site.
