Before Registering: Make sure you determine what type of business structure you will be using (sole-proprietorship, partnership or corporation) and what the name of your business is going to be. If you’re all set to register your business follow the steps below:
Step 1: Register with Canada Revenue Agency.
In order to run a business in Canada, most businesses are required to register with Canada Revenue Agency. Once you’ve registered your business, you will receive a business number to be used for these and other accounts:
- GST/HST
- Payroll deductions
- Corporate income tax
- Import/Export account

Step 2: Your business may also require additional registrations with different government departments, depending on the type of business you own. Visit canada.ca/en/services/business.html and follow the steps below:
- Select Starting from the navigation bar menu.
- Next, select Registering your business from the list provided.
- Scroll scroll down the page to Provincial and territorial business registration and review registration requirements for the province in which you will operate your business.
- Read through the organizations listed and determine if your business should be registered with them as well.
- Select any organizations that apply. At the bottom of each page you’ll see a link to Learn more, Find contacts and Access application form(s). All of these link you directly to the organization’s home site.
